This simple chocolate pudding dessert is always popular and one of the first pans to be cleaned out at a potluck, carry-in or holiday meal!

Chocolate Delight Recipe
Layers of rich cream cheese, chocolate pudding and Cool Whip on a buttery crust with a light nutty flavor makes an enjoyable dessert.
My husband has always known this as the Chocolate Delight, but others call it the Four Layer Pudding Dessert, 4 Layer Delight or Chocolate Lush. Chocolate is definitely the star of the show among all of the layers. Some aunts remember calling it the Robert Redford or Chocolate Chip Cookie Delight.
In my husband’s family at a potluck you’ll often find Oreo Dirt Cake or White Texas Sheet Cake alongside the Chocolate Delight on the dessert table. On a good day several of these classics will be there!
At the family reunion an aunt said that her grandson told me that the mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top make it extra special to him. Another grandchild shared that they would rather have this pudding, cool whip, and cream cheese dessert for their birthday than a regular chocolate cake.
Ingredients Needed to Make Chocolate Pudding Delight
- Butter
- Flour
- Chopped Nuts
- Cream Cheese
- Confectioners Sugar
- Cool Whip
- Milk
- Instant vanilla pudding
- Instant chocolate pudding

How to Make Chocolate Delight
- Coat a 9 by 13 pan with non-stick cooking spray and preheat oven to 350°F. Mix crust ingredients, press into pan and bake for 20 minutes.
- Cool crust before adding the next layer
- Mix together cream cheese, confectioners sugar, 1 cup of Cool Whip and spread on cool crust
- Whisk milk and pudding together and spread over dessert
- Spread remaining cool whip over all layers and sprinkle with chocolate chips
- Keep refrigerated
What is the Most Famous Dessert in America?
Chocolate delight has got to be a strong contender for being a famous and well-loved American dessert. I made this dish for a family reunion and a young family member was grateful because his branch usually brings it, but they had been too busy to make it.
This is an easy pudding dessert that is very common at holiday parties, picnics, parties, family reunions and church potlucks.
Step By Step Instructions
Using a small mixing bowl melt butter and stir in flour. Mix until smooth, then stir in finely chopped nuts.
Press into an even layer in a 9×13″ baking dish.
Bake in an oven preheated to 350°F for 20 minutes.
Allow the crust to cool before adding the next layer.
Making The Creamy Layers
Mix together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar and 1 cup of Cool Whip.
Spread over cooled crust.
The use a whisk to mix up pudding and milk. Chill pudding until spreadable, but not set, about 10 – 20 minutes.
Spread over top of cream cheese layer.
Then taking remaining whipped topping and spread over the pudding layer.
Sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
Another option is to drizzle chocolate syrup on top like we do on our Cream Puff Cake.
Store leftovers covered tightly in the fridge for 3 to 5 days.
Tips for Making Chocolate Delight
- Defrost Cool Whip and soften cream cheese before making chocolate pudding delight
- Allow crust to cool before adding layers
- Two boxes of instant chocolate pudding can be used instead of one vanilla and one chocolate
- Dessert can be partially frozen before serving if desired
- Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips or sprinkles to make the dessert more fun
- Since there are a lot of dairy products in this recipe store in the refrigerator
