Other veggies can be added to this simple Spam Fried Rice, but we enjoy this basic recipe the most!
Why This Recipe Works
- A complete meal is made in one dish which saves time in the kitchen.
- Makes a great breakfast, lunch or dinner for family and friends.
- Similar, but slightly different flavor profile than Kielbasa in our popular Sausage Fried Rice.
- Leftover rice works great in this recipe that freezes and reheats well.
- Saves money over grabbing take out repeatedly.
Ingredients Needed
- SPAM – One 12 ounce container of regular spam is our preference, but it comes in a variety of flavors.
- Vegetable Oil – Other types of oil work fine too.
- Eggs – Add more protein and rich flavor to the rice.
- Carrots and Peas – A frozen bag works well, but fresh carrots can be chopped and take a minute or two longer to cook.
- Bell Pepper – Red, orange, or yellow bell pepper that’s a bit sweeter is our preference.
- White Rice – Prepare 2 cups of uncooked white rice or 4 cups of cooked rice. We like long grain or jasmine.
- Soy Sauce – This can be added to the skillet or served on the side so each individual season their rice to their preference.
- Green Onions – Slice up and garnish the rice just before serving for more fresh flavors.

Why Use SPAM?
SPAM comes in a shelf stable can that stores well in the pantry instead of taking up space in the refrigerator.
The meat comes with different seasonings making it very easy to change the flavor profile of your fried rice.
Spam makes efficient use of a pig’s carcass. Anytime you make whole cuts of meat like ribs, pork butt, ham, etc. there are trimmings and miscuts. These are still good, quality pieces of meat that can be ground into spam.
Salt and seasonings contribute to making a shelf stable meat product.

There is nothing wrong with using canned meat. We also use canned chicken in our high quality Shredded Chicken Sandwiches and Buffalo Chicken Dip Wraps.
Why is SPAM popular in Hawaii?
A combination of culturally popular food as well as the ability to transport from the mainland meat packing plants and store for long periods of time make SPAM a food of choice with Hawaiians.
Thus using this salty meat to create a flavorful Hawaiian Fried Rice is popular on the islands.

How To Cook Spam
Open the can and turn upside down to remove the meat. A slit may need to be carefully made in the bottom to allow air in and the meat to release.
Slice the loaf of SPAM into even slices. We prefer 1/4″ square pieces, so we make 1/4″ slices.
Then cut into evenly sized cubes.
Heat one to two tablespoons of oil over medium high heat.

Add meat to a preheated skillet and cook for 2 – 3 minutes. Stir often with a wooden spoon with a flat edge or spatula until all sides are evenly browned.
This usually takes 4 to 6 minutes for small pieces in a good skillet and 10 to 12 minutes to brown the full slices.
Browning the meat is important because brown is not just a color, it really brings out the flavor.
Step By Step Instructions
Cook 2 cups of uncooked white rice according to the directions on the package.
Use a large non-stick skillet that will make it easy to stir this big batch of rice.
Heat a tablespoon of oil and brown the small pieces of SPAM. Once evenly browned set aside on a large, clean plate.
Then add whole eggs to the hot skillet.

Use a spatula to cut into pieces as the egg fries.

Add the cooked eggs to the plate with the browned meat.
Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of the remaining oil and add to the skillet.
Warm oil and add vegetables. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

Put cooked rice and soy sauce in the skillet with the mostly cooked vegetables.

Break up the clumps of rice and stir well. Warm through.
Return the meat and eggs to the skillet.

Stir well and serve warm.
Storage and Freezing Instructions
Store leftovers in a an airtight container or bag in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
This easy Spam Fried Rice reheats very well in a skillet with a little oil or covered in the microwave.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- A deeper skillet or wok with high sides makes stirring everything together much easier.
- One and a half cans of SPAM, or a pound meat works fine in this recipe too.
- A microwave splatter cover helps trap in the steam to keep the fried rice moist while reheating.
