Caramel Apple Pie With Condensed Milk Recipe
If you love dipping apples in caramel, then you’ll LOVE Farmhouse Caramel Apple Pie with condensed milk to make it even more special!
We’ve been loving all of the apple recipes this fall. This is our favorite apple pie because it’s got extra caramel flavor! This pie is the ultimate caramel dip for apples already mixed together.
We love variations of popular fall desserts like this apple pie with sweetened condensed milk and our Apple Crisp with Peanut Butter Crumble with a little twist.
The hardest part of this recipe for me is shaping the edge of the crust. I love that this pie dish from Amazon doesn’t require any skill, it looks like you can just press your crust into the preformed ripples. That would guarantee all of my pies to be perfectly shaped!
Apple Pie For Baking Contest
I first made this recipe at the age of 13 for a baking contest at an area festival called Happy Apple Days. My mom gave me the recipe then and reminded me of it again recently. While I honestly don’t remember the outcome of that contest I do know I have a lot of ribbons from those type of contests. My mom spent hours teaching me baking and cooking skills and I’m so grateful for that!
Growing up on a farm and being very active in 4-H. A few activities I enjoyed were serving as the county Pork Princess and Dairy Princess. In that role, I would go to area parades and festivals to promote the farm product I was representing. I imagine I was scheduled to attend the Happy Apple Days festival when I was royalty and my mom suggested that I go ahead and enter the baking contest since I would be there.
Ingredients Needed to Make Caramel Apple Pie:
- Unbaked pie crust
- Apples – We prefer Jonathan apples for baking
- Cinnamon
- Flour
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Caramels
- Brown Sugar
- Butter
How to Make Homemade Caramel Apple Pie
- Place oven rack in lowest position. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Lay pie crust in pie pan and make a consistent shape around the outside with your fingers.
- In a large bowl toss apples with 3 tablespoons flour and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
- In a heavy saucepan, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramels. Over medium heat, cook and stir until caramels melt and the mixture is smooth. Immediately toss caramel mixture with apples, spoon into pie crust.
- In a small bowl mix remaining 1/4 cup flour, brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly and sprinkle over pie.
- Bake for 30 minutes, then cover edges with foil and bake for 10 – 20 minutes longer until the entire pie is set.
Step By Step Instructions
Line a pie crust with a refrigerated pie crust that’s been brought to room temp or make a homemade pie crust. Use fingers to shape the edges.
Peel and thinly slice 6 cups of apples which is about 5 medium apples or 4 1/2 large apples.
We prefer to bake with Jonathan apples in this recipe.
Sprinkle flour and cinnamon over apples and mix until all slices have a thin coating on each side.
In a saucepan over medium heat melt caramels and stir in sweetened condensed milk.
Stir often and take care not to let the mixture burn.
Pour over the apples and stir until each slice has an even coating of the sweet mixture.
Pour into the unbaked pie crust.
Mix streusel ingredients and cut slices of cold butter in with a fork. Sprinkle over the pie.
Set in an oven preheated to 375°F for 30 minutes.
Then fold pieces of foil to cover the edges of the crust and bake for another 10 – 20 minutes until the center of the pie is set.
When Is This Caramel Apple Pie Set?
Another skill that my mom has taught me is determining when the pie is set or finished baking.
While the crust looks done after 30 minutes in the oven, the center of the pie is definitely not finished baking. That’s why the foil is so helpful to protect the crust from burning while the rest of the pie finishes baking.
This caramel apple pie is done when it doesn’t jiggle anymore when picked up. It may move some in the center, but out towards the edges shouldn’t move at all.
Letting the pie rest for at least 30 minutes will also allow it to continue baking.
