When I’m craving warm cookies and milk it’s the hearty oats and rich cocoa flavor in the dark chocolate with a hint of sea salt in these Dark Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies that I dream of.
I love the tender crumb from using butter flavored shortening, fullness that the oatmeal adds and the touch of sweetness from the dark chocolate.

Dark Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies Recipe
My dear neighbor and baker extraordinaire shared this recipe with me and it’s one of my favorite cookies! She reduced the amount of sugar from the original recipe she’s had for decades. This adjustment makes the cookies more hearty than sweet and I love that!
Old fashioned oats make the cookies more filling and dark chocolate chips pull all of the ingredients together for a perfect flavor combination!
The boys in my family prefer these sweeter farmhouse double chocolate chip cookies, but I like this variety so I make both of these great cookie recipes!

Tips For Freezing The Dough
I like to use this cookie scoop to make balls and bake about half of the recipe. Then I take the other half of the dough, form balls and freeze them.
Frozen dough only takes a minute or two longer to bake, and keeping some on hand means you can have warm cookies anytime.

How to Make Dark Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350ºF. I like to use a non-stick liner on my baking sheet.
- Mix butter flavored shortening and granulated sugar. Add vanilla extract and eggs. Beat until creamy.
- In a separate bowl mix together all-purpose flour, salt, baking soda and vanilla.
- Slowly add to shortening, sugar and egg mixture. Stir until combined.
- Then add old-fashioned oats and mix again.
- Fold in chocolate chips.
- Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto ungreased or lined cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack.

Dark Chocolate and Oatmeal Cookies

- 1 cup shortening butter flavored
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 cups old fashioned oats
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 10 ounce bag dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- Mix shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla extract. Beat until creamy.
- In a separate bowl stir together flour, salt, and baking soda. Slowly add to creamed mixture and stir well.
- Add oatmeal and stir. Then fold in chocolate chips.
- Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.

The oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were wonderful. I was low on chocolate chips so I included butterscotch chips and walnuts as well. ,This recipe is a keeper!
