A crunchy, golden brown topping of flour, sugar and butter allow the apple flavor to shine through in our Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp recipe.
This easy apple recipe is the favorite of from Lynd’s Fruit Farm – a popular orchard in central Ohio. We love our Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings from another orchard, so we had to try this!
Notable for the simplicity of the ingredients and made without oats this baked apple dish reminds everyone who has tried it of something their Grandma made.
We tested making the exact same Apple Crisp recipe multiple times. Here are some tips to make it memorable and amazing, as well as a list of things to avoid so it doesn’t fall flat!
DO These Things:
- Bake this in a square 8×8″ or 9×9″ dish
- Serve warm in small bowls or dishes
- Add a scoop of slightly softened vanilla ice cream on top
- Spoon the sauce from the bottom of the baking dish over each serving
Avoid Doing This:
- Using a 9 x 13″ pan – in our first test I thought there were too many apples for a smaller pan, so I spread them out and the topping and sauce ratio lost the magic
- Serving on a plate – this makes it too difficult to capture the amazing sweet sauce that bakes out of the apples and mixes with the sugar and cinnamon while baking
- Using a fork – a spoon is the best utensil for scooping up all of the goodness
Ingredients Needed
- Apples – Jonathan or Granny Smith apples, a slightly tart apple
- Water – creates a beautiful simple sauce while the dish bakes
- Cinnamon
- All-Purpose Flour
- Granulated Sugar
- Butter – use butter for the full rich flavor

Step By Step Instructions
Peel, slice and core apples. Lay in an 8 x 8″ dish.
Pour water in the dish and sprinkle cinnamon over the top. Use a spoon to toss the apples in cinnamon.
In a medium sized mixing bowl beat butter. Mix in sugar and all-purpose flour. Use a pastry blender to cut the butter into the mixture until crumbly.
Sprinkle this crumbly mixture over the top of the cinnamon coated apples.
Bake in an oven preheated to 350℉ for 30 to 35 minutes until the apples are soft.
The top will begin to become golden brown, but will not fully brown across the top.
The benefit of using a square 8×8″ pan is having deep layers of apples in a simple sauce with a thick crust.
Serve warm with softened vanilla ice cream for a wonderful fall treat!
Avoid A Thin Apple Crisp
When we made this old fashion apple crisp in a 9×13″ pan the crumbly topping was too thin for maximum enjoyment.
