Making Instant Pot Hard-Boiled Eggs is a super easy way to cook up breakfast, a snack or boil Easter eggs to color.
Finding the correct cooking times for your pressure cooker can make boiled eggs with tender whites and golden yolks every time!

Pressure Cooker Eggs
Hard boiled eggs make a great high protein breakfast or snack. We also enjoy deviled eggs and boiled eggs in our Farmhouse Potato Salad and Spinach and Egg Salad. When friends told me making eggs in an electric pressure cooker is the easiest way to cook boiled eggs I knew I needed to learn how.
Breakfast casseroles with eggs are some of our favorites. From our basic Egg & Sausage Casserole to our Brioche Breakfast Casserole or the slightly fancier Everything Bagel and Sausage Casserole we love a good egg dish for breakfast!
When offered an idea to have a high protein breakfast ready to go we knew trial and error would be involved. After extensive testing I’ve learned that different Instant Pots work differently and different sizes of eggs cook in different periods of time. This article can serve as a great place to get started making Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs!
How Long to Cook Eggs in the Instant Pot?
To get a hard boiled egg in our 8 quart Instant Pot Duo, I cook large eggs for 8 minutes, do a quick release of the pressure, move eggs quickly into ICE cold water and peel within 5 minutes. The time is the same to make two eggs or a dozen eggs.
Please pay special attention to using the ice cold water. The eggs need to cool to the center of the yolk to stop cooking once they have reached desired doneness. If the ice keeps melting that means the center of the egg is still holding heat and still cooking.
This is the best way for me to make Easter eggs for my kids to dye or color! I always make a couple extra eggs in case one splits open.
When is a Boiled Egg Done?
There are many levels of doneness for boiled eggs. Some people like soft boiled eggs with a soft center which take 5 minutes in my Instant Pot Duo. Cook 1 – 2 minutes longer for more of a jelly or jam consistency of the yolk. Cook an additional 1 – 2 minutes for a hard cooked egg. Using a jumbo egg or an 8 quart Instant Pot also adds 1 – 2 minutes.
With all of the variations in personal preference and how tools work the way to achieve the perfect hard-boiled egg is to test your own appliance.
Instant Pot Tips & Tricks
- Lift lid and point away from you and anyone else nearby to avoid getting burned
- Cook time is the same whether cooking 2 eggs or 12 eggs at a time as long as eggs are the same size
- Do not fill pot more than 2/3 full for best results
- If an egg cracks or splits open and a little bit of the boiled egg white pushes out the side it is still safe to eat if it cooked for the full amount of time.
- Always make a couple extra eggs in case a couple split open while cooking
- If eggs have a greenish tinge of line around the outside of the yolk they are overcooked. Try another batch and decrease the cooking time.
- Cooking times will vary based on your appliance and a variety of factors. You should test this recipe in your own appliance to determine the best cooking time for your situation.
Do You Need A Rack?
I have a yellow silicone egg rack for the Instant Pot. It looks nice and works fine, but the wire rack that comes with the Instant Pot also works fine. You do not have to purchase any additional tools to make hard-boiled eggs in an electric pressure cooker.
The purpose of the rack is to give enough space for liquid to circulate inside the pot. The rack or another tool prevents eggs from sticking to the bottom of the pot which could cause the “burn” feature to kick on and stop pressure cooking.
How to Peel Boiled Eggs
Gently tap on the counter in a few or several spots and then hold egg under a small stream of cold running water as thumb is inserted in the largest crack. Break away small pieces while holding under water until the water gets under shell and helps seperate the egg from the shell.
You can also crack the shell and peel without running water, but I like to have a small bowl of water nearby to help rinse off any extra pieces of egg shells if needed.
How to Make Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
- Place eggs on wire rack or another electric pressure cooker approved rack inside Instant Pot.
- Add 1 cup of water.
- Seal pot and cook on high pressure for 8 minutes.
- Use quick release as soon as cook time is over.
- Immediately use tongs to place eggs in an ice water bath.
- Peel eggs right away under a small stream of running water.
- Store eggs in a self sealing bag or airtight container on paper towels in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Eggs hold a lot of water so paper towels may need changed every day or two.
Cooking Times DO Vary
My friend Chef Alli swears that she makes 24 eggs in an 18 quart (6 quart holds 15 – 18 eggs) in 5 minutes. As soon as the eggs are done cooking she does a quick release, immediately places the eggs in ice water and peels them as quickly as possible. She has a Cuisinart pressure cooker. Following these instructions with a 6 or 8 Instant Pot duo has always resulted in really soft eggs for me, so I had to increase the cooking time.
All of the eggs in the picture below were cooked for 8 minutes on high pressure in an 8 quart Instant Pot duo. The eggs on the left were sliced in half immediately after being removed from the Instant Pot. The eggs on the right were placed in a bath of cold water and then peeled and sliced 30 minutes after being cooked.

The only comment was I found someone say tap the bottom of the egg where this is an air bubble to peel and they peel so quick and one spiral almost! Thank you for the the tips on varying cook times for yolk softness. I had not seen this before.
Thanks for sharing! I had not heard this before!
I just “upgraded” to an 8-quart Instant Pot Pro Crisp 11-in-1 from a 6-quart Instant Pot Lux 6-in-1 and I just can’t get hard-boiled eggs right. In the 6qt I could do a dozen with a 3-minute cook time and a quick release and they were perfect. Now with the 8qt I started with just 6 eggs using the same cook time and the eggs weren’t even coddled. I increased cook time to the 5-5-5 method and the eggs were just at the coddled stage. Is my brand new 8qt not functioning properly, or is this just a quirk of getting used to the new Instant Pot size/model?
Hey There! You are correct in that it takes time, practice, patience and testing to come up with the proper cooking time as it does vary quite a bit across brands, sizes and even different appliances that are the same brand. These are the guidelines that work well in our home in our appliance. I hope it helps you.
