Garlic, Parmesan, mozzarella and provolone on buttered bread is the BEST combination we’ve found for semi-homemade Texas Toast With Cheese.

My family craves this semi-homemade Texas Cheese Toast that is so easy to make and tastes great with pasta meals or a nice piece of meat.

Close up white cheese melted on top of Texas toast and lightly golden brown around the edges with a soft cheesy center surrounded by other slices of Texas cheese toast.

This recipe is also great to use when making Chicken Parmesan Pizza.

Texas Cheese Toast Recipe

Thick Texas toast slathered with melted butter, garlic, Parmesan and oregano covered in two layers of melted mozzarella and provolone cheese is absolutely irresistible!

Watching the cheese bubble up and start to turn lightly brown makes my mouth water as this bread bakes.

We love looking for new ways to make a family meal more exciting. This Texas cheese toast tastes great served with Crock Pot Lasagna, Crock Pot Spaghetti or Spaghetti Pizza Casserole.

Like a restaurant-style bread, our garlic cheese toast goes along with Pot Roast or Pork Chops. This recipe is a perfect way to use bread that is starting to go stale. My kids absolutely love bread, and picking up some day old bread that has been marked down is and is a great value.

This cheese toast recipe has our garlic, oregano and Parmesan spread from our popular Stromboli. The mixture adds so much flavor sandwiched between the bread and cheeses.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Texas Toast – A thick cut more square shaped bread that is found in the bread aisle. Day old bread works fine in this recipe.
  • Butter – Melts to become the vehicle to spread the herbs and spices over the whole piece of bread.
  • Garlic Powder – Spreads out easier than freshly minced garlic which can be used if you prefer.
  • Oregano – The bits of green herb that adds flavor, aroma and eye appeal.
  • Parmesan Cheese – Creates a classic Italian cheese flavor.
  • Mozzarella – Melts well and adds more creaminess.
  • Provolone – The slices are so easy to place on the toast and add a thick layer or flavorful cheese.
  • Parsley – A nice garnish for the top if you like.
Ingredients to make homemade garlic cheese bread are slices of fresh Texas toast, shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, slices of provolone, butter, garlic powder and oregano on a wooden counter top.

Texas Toast Garlic Cheese Bread in Air Fryer

Our family of four prefers making this garlicky bread in our air fryer and toaster oven because the tray holds 6 slices of Texas Toast and heats up so quickly. The toaster oven is most convenient for me, but I have certainly made this recipe in the oven and that works fine too.

Using our Cuisinart Air Fryer & Toaster Oven that sits up on the counter makes it so easy to peep in and watch the cheese bubbling. If bubbling cheese doesn’t make your face smile, surely your heart will smile at the sight.

Some pepperoni can easily be added to have a heartier appetizer or meal and make another spin on one of my favorites – Air Fryer Pizza Sliders.

Cheesy Texas Toast on the Grill

Grilling is one of our favorite ways to make dinner in nice weather. Everything can be made on the grill which saves a mess and cuts down on dishes inside the house. Marinated Pork Chops or Sweet & Sour Chicken Kabobs make an amazing meal served with a slice of cheesy Texas toast.

When making grilled cheesy toast I always use a layer of foil to prevent burning and help the bread warm more evenly. Heavy Duty aluminum foil is thicker and preferable, but regular foil is better than nothing.

Placing bread on the top rack is a great way to warm the bread and melt the cheese without the higher heat of the bottom grill grate.

Tips for Making Cheesy Toast

  • A thick bread works best for this recipe since it’s loaded with cheese and so many flavors
  • Sometimes I like to slice a loaf of Italian or French bread and add this garlic and cheese mixture
  • If using foil on the solid tray in toaster oven be sure to cover the tray tightly so loose edges don’t inhibit air flow
  • Toast can be buttered on both sides if preferred, but I like to sandwich all of the garlic flavors in between the toast and melted cheese
  • A combination of at least two cheeses works best to maximize flavors
  • Day-old bread off of the discount rack works great for this recipe and helps save money
  • Garlic toast reheats well in the toaster oven in just a couple minutes

Step By Step Instructions

Line a baking sheet with foil and arrange 6 thick, fresh slices of Texas toast in a single layer on the pan.

In a small bowl melt butter. Add grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder and oregano and mix well.

Spoon in a small glass dish with melted butter, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano and dried parsley on a white counter top.

Spoon onto the bread and spread in an even layer.

Bake in a 375F oven for about 5 – 7 minutes until the cheese is melted and toasty brown around the edges.

How to Make Texas Cheese Toast

  1. For crispy toast, very lightly toast bread before adding additional ingredients. I often enjoy a soft garlic cheesy bread and skip this step.
  2. Melt butter and stir in Parmesan cheese, garlic powder and oregano. Ensure that spices are mixed into butter very evenly!
  3. Divide butter and spices by spooning some on each slice of bread. Spread the melted butter mixture to the edge of each slice
  4. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over each piece, spreading cheese to the edges.
  5. Add a slice of provolone cheese to each slice of toast
  6. Bake in air fryer for 5 minutes at 350°F

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 cup mozzarella
  • 6 slices provolone
  • 6 slices Texas toast or other thick slice of bread
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley optional garnish

Instructions

  • Lightly toasting bread before applying seasonings is optional. Toasting makes bread more crunchy, skipping this step will keep bread more soft.
  • Melt butter and stir in Parmesan, oregano and garlic powder. Mix well.
  • Arrange bread in air fryer basket or on a baking sheet in a flat, single layer. Spread mixture evenly over slices of bread.
  • Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over toast. Add a slice of provolone to each slice of toast.
  • Place in Air Fryer at 350°F for 5 minutes or bake in a convection oven at 375°F for 6 – 7 minutes until cheese is melted.
  • Garnish with parsley if desired and serve.
