Better Than Store Bought

We are a family of chocolate cake lovers. An excellent chocolate frosting can really make or break even a good cake recipe. In our recipe the rich dairy flavors balance out the powdered sugar well.

If store boughten frosting is a 9 out of 10 for sweetness, our icing is a 6.5 out of 10 and very enjoyable.

A can of frosting often has an artificial taste where this recipe has more of a natural sweetness. Our chocolate icing is smooth and creamy and has an enjoyable homemade taste from fresh ingredients.

Ingredients Needed

  • Powdered Sugar or confectioners sugar
  • Butter – must be softened to room temperature, but not melted
  • Unsweetened Cocoa
  • Vanilla Extract – use the pure stuff for maximum flavor.

Plan to have a little extra milk and up to a cup of extra powdered sugar on hand to make adjustments as necessary.

The actual volume of confectioner’s sugar will be affected by whether the powdered sugar is sifted, scooped or spooned or the measuring cup in the measuring process.

This frosting needs more than 1/3 cup of milk, but not 1/2 cup. Start with 1/3 cup and add a tablespoon at a time until reaches desired consistency.

It is much easier to add 1 tablespoon of milk or cream at a time and impossible to take away. So slowly adjust the consistency of the frosting by adding an additional tablespoon of milk at a time until it’s easy to spread. 1 teaspoon of milk can be added at a time for smaller adjustments.

We add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar at a time to make thicker if needed.

How To Make Homemade Chocolate Icing

Sit butter out a couple hours ahead of time to come to room temperature. Do not melt butter in the microwave.

In a medium mixing bowl beat softened butter.

Then add powdered sugar and cocoa. Stir or sift together with a fork.

Add vanilla extract and 1/3 cup of milk. Beat until mixed well.

After fully mixing add 1 tablespoon of milk at a time until reaching your desired consistency.

The frosting in the photo above is thick and needs one to two more tablespoons of milk to be spreadable. As more liquid is added it will get a little shinier.

Spread on your favorite cake and enjoy!

Take It To The Next Level

Melt one cup of chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of milk and 1 tablespoon of crisco in the microwave and use a spoon to drizzle over the top of chilled frosting on a cake.
