Crunchy Pea Salad

A creamy white dressing made of mayo and sour cream coats green peas, crunchy celery and water chestnuts accented by green onions makes a perfect summer salad!

With only 7 simple ingredients this old fashioned side dish can be mixed up in about ten minutes. Cold and refreshing, this vegetable side dish isn’t overly sweet, just naturally sweet from the peas.

The first time we made pea salad was to share with workers at our church VBS meal. This is truly a nostalgic recipe for others to see on the table at a family reunion, church carry-in or family gathering. Hearing the variety of comments and memories about this salad is always fun!

Ingredients Needed

  • Peas – a bag of frozen peas hold their shape better than canned peas, if using canned drain well
  • Water Chestnuts – drain a can well and chop finely
  • Celery – cut the stalk in half lengthwise and slice finely
  • Green Onions – thin slices are preferred
  • Dressing – mayonnaise, sour cream and seasoned salt (we typically have Lowry’s brand on hand)

Step By Step Instructions

In a medium sized mixing bowl stir together the dressing ingredients which are mayonnaise, sour cream and seasoned salt.

Add the remaining salad ingredients.

Stir well, cover and chill through before serving.

Common add-ins are boiled eggs, ham, and the combination of bacon and American cheese. Sometimes we like adding a little leftover holiday ham to change up the flavor profile.

A creamy mayo and sour cream dressing coats sweet green peas, crunchy celery, water chestnuts, and green onions in this old-fashioned Crunchy Pea Salad.

Ingredients
  

  • 12 ounces frozen peas thawed
  • 8 ounce can sliced water chestnuts drained
  • 1 cup celery thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup green onions sliced
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup seasoned salt optional

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl stir together mayonnaise, sour cream and seasoned salt.
    1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup seasoned salt
  • Add thawed peas, water chestnuts, celery and green onions. Toss to coat.
    12 ounces frozen peas, 8 ounce can sliced water chestnuts, 1 cup celery, 1/2 cup green onions
  • Chill at least 3 hours before serving.
