Smoked Hamburgers

A patty of ground beef seasoned with salt, pepper and other simple spices is taken up a few levels when infused with smoke flavor on an electric smoker.

Our family really enjoys a great hamburger and it took us too long to set a few burgers on a sheet of foil on the smoker for 40 minutes. This truly a set it and forget it type recipe.

Perfect to get started on an electric pellet grill and then work on prepping toppings and other tasks while the burgers smoke we love making this recipe all year around. Just like our Electric Smoker Chicken and Pigs Wings there’s so much flavor with so little effort in smoked meat!

Tender all the way through and no crispy edges, a smoked burger has more natural flavor than a grilled burger. 

Close the smoker and you don’t have to continually watch or flip burgers on a pellet grill like you do when using a propane grill.

How to Smoke Burgers

Start smoker and set temp to 275°F. The machine takes about 15 minutes to start and preheat.

Let the lean ground beef patties set out to knock the chill off for up to 30 minutes before smoking.

Use 1/2 teaspoon of seasoning per burger. We typically just season the top side.

Thermometer probe in the side of a seasoned, raw burger patty to test doneness on a pellet smoker.

Insert a clean temperature probe in the side of the ground beef burgers to the center to maximize contact and get the best reading.

Burgers that are 1/6 of a pound take 40 minutes to cook and do not require flipping, although flipping once halfway through can be done if you prefer.

We often smoke a foil pan of baby potatoes along with the burgers on a smoker to make a full meal. The potatoes take longer, but are also a hands off options.

We typically use a combination of granulated garlic, black pepper and sea salt. Test a variety of combinations to find each persons favorite. Cajun seasoning or a burger or bbq seasoning are crowd favorites.

Once the probe or an instant read meat thermometer reads 160°F the smoked hamburgers are done cooking and safe to eat. Evenly sized patties will cook at the same rate and finish at the same time.

Making Smoked Cheeseburgers

Once the burgers are done add a slice of American or Colby Jack cheese. Close the lid and the cheese will often melt within a minute or two.

Remove smoked burger patties with a spatula and set on a plate lined with paper towels to help absorb ay excess fat.

We love to stack a fresh brioche bun with butter lettuce, a slice of tomato, thinly sliced red onion and a burger topped with American or Colby Jack cheese.

How Long To Smoke Burgers At 275°F

Evenly sized, uniform burgers that are about 1/6 of a pound take 35 to 40 minutes to cook on a smoker at 275°F.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound ground beef divided in 6 patties
  • 3 teaspoons burger seasoning or salt, pepper and granulated garlic

Instructions

  • Preheat electric smoker to 275℉.
  • Lay a piece of non-stick foil on the smoker and arrange burgers on top with an inch of space between patties. Add 1/2 teaspoon of seasoning to each patty.
    1 pound ground beef, 3 teaspoons burger seasoning
  • Insert a probe in the side of each burger to the center. Close the lid and cook until ground beef reaches an internal temperature of 160℉.
  • Top with a slice of cheese if desired. Serve immediately with lettuce, tomato, onions.
