An Easy Kielbasa and Pasta Recipe

When you have no idea what to cook and have Kielbasa, sauerkraut and pasta on hand this is a simple skillet meal that is easy and satisfying.

At first, mixing pasta into a classic Kielbasa and Sauerkraut recipe sound odd, but it works really well. The noodles absorb whatever flavor profile you have.

We tested shredding Parmesan and cheddar cheese over different servings. The parmesan is more of an accent flavor and the cheddar is more dominant.

Fork in pieces of bowtie pasta and a slice of Kielbasa accented with sauerkraut and onion ready to take a bite on a plate full of the easy meal.

My husband prefers the original sauerkraut and sausage recipe with pasta as listed below (without cheese). He says the noodles carry the flavor, acting like little flavor ships, cargo vessels, or whatever mode of transport to your tastebuds that you prefer. Others prefer adding cheese.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Kielbasa – or Smoked Sausage
  • Sauerkraut – rinsed and drained
  • Pasta – we like bow tie pasta to create more surface area to hold the sauerkraut and onions
  • Butter – gives a great depth of flavor
  • Beef bouillon – a secret ingredient that really flavors the pasta
  • Onion – a medium yellow onion or small sweet onion works great
  • Mustard – grainy, coarse-ground mustard is optional, we like Dijon
Ingredients to make Kielbasa and pasta are butter, sauerkraut, Kielbasa sausage, bow tie pasta, onion and beef bouillon paste on a wooden counter top.

Step By Step Instructions

Cook pasta according to the directions on the package. Be sure to reserve a cup of pasta water before draining. Optional – stir in 1 tablespoon of butter to prevent the pasta from sticking.

In a large skillet over medium to medium high heat, melt butter and saute the chopped onion until soft.

Then add beef bouillon and stir until dissolved. Next stir in mustard.

Add slices of Kielbasa sausage and drained sauerkraut.

Cover and cook on medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes until the sausage is lightly browned.

Turn to low heat and stir in cooked pasta. Add 1/2 cup up to the full 1 cup of reserved pasta water.

Thick layer of sauerkraut with softened onions stirred into butter with slices of Kielbasa nestled in to cook.

Stir gently and cook over low heat for 10 minutes. This allows the pasta to absorb other flavors.

Serving spoon in a pot of Kielbasa pasta and sauerkraut with a serving on a white plate and a fork ready to eat on a yellow and cream napkin.

Serve warm and sprinkle with Parmesan or cheddar cheese if you like.
