A Simple Crockpot Potato Recipe

This crock pot potato recipe was adapted from a 4-H contest that I participated in.  The original name is Gourmet Potatoes, but they are also called Scalloped Potatoes because of the thins slices. It’s a winner in our book – a mild, enjoyable flavor with an upscale taste on a budget.

Our family of farmers loves to eat meat and potatoes.  Some of our favorite protein and potato recipes are Hamburger and Potato Casserole, Smoked Sausage, Green Beans and Potatoes, and German Potato Casserole.

We appreciate that these slow cooker scalloped potatoes go great with Smoked Burgers, Asian Pork Tenderloin or about any meat that we make. This is a simple and versatile recipe.

Why This Scalloped Potato Recipe Works:

  • Creamy and flavorful: The combination of cheese soup and evaporated milk creates a rich, velvety sauce that coats every slice of potato.
  • Hands-off cooking: Everything cooks right in the slow cooker — no boiling or baking required.
  • Great for gatherings: Easy to transport and keep warm, making it perfect for potlucks, family dinners, or holidays.
  • Simple ingredients: No fancy prep — just sliced potatoes and a few pantry staples.

Ingredients Needed

  • Fresh Potatoes – we typically use Russet or the best value type – they will need peeled and sliced, so medium potatoes work best to get uniform shaped slices.
  • Cheddar Cheese Soup – adds a light cheese flavor.
  • Evaporated Milk – richer than regular milk and helps the seasonings coat every slice.
  • Butter – use the real stuff – also helps deepen the flavors.
  • Seasonings – Salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. The amounts are very conservative, many people prefer to double the onion and garlic powders.
Ingredients to make crock pot potatoes are evaporated milk, cheddar cheese soup, large potatoes, butter, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder on a wooden counter top.

Step By Step Instructions

Scrub the potato skins, peel and carefully use a mandolin or pairing knife to slice the potatoes.

Add one third of the potatoes to the bottom of the crock pot.

In a small mixing bowl melt butter. Then stir in cheese soup and use the evaporated milk to dilute the soup. Add seasonings and mix well.

Pour 1/3 of the sauce over the potatoes.

Repeat until you have three layers of potatoes each covered with 1/3 of the sauce.

Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 1/2 hours.

I would not recommend cooking scalloped potatoes in the crock pot on high. The edges are likely to burn before the center cooks through.

Once a fork inserted in the center confirms that all potatoes are cooked until tender, serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Peel and slice potatoes as thin possible – less than 1/4”. We use a mandolin, be sure to always use the guard and watch your fingers and knuckles!
  • Do not stir. The edges will brown up a bit more than the center. Test the very center with a fork to ensure all pieces are tender and cooke through.
  • We have tested this recipe using sour cream instead of milk and the sauce just doesn’t stick to the potatoes the same way as in this slow cooker scalloped potato recipe.
