Easy Homemade Cornbread
Freshly baked cornbread speaks smoked meat slathered in bbq sauce, mac and cheese and Meaty Baked Beans. Cornbread also reminds me of a holiday meal with Cornbread Dressing or an everyday chili meal with bread on the side.

Good barbecue needs to be accompanied by bread, rolls or buns of some kind. Cornbread is the most classic barbecue side dish.
A friend shared their family’s homemade cornbread recipe. While cornbread isn’t a regular item on our dinner rotation we love trying a variety of recipes.
This cornbread recipe is so easy to make we won’t need to keep a box mix on hand anymore. Cornmeal plus basic baking ingredients can be quickly mixed up in less than 5 minutes and baked for 30 minutes.
Baking in a 450ºF oven forms a wonderful top crust. For a soft top lower the oven temperature.

How to Make Homemade Cornbread
- Lightly grease 8 x 8 x 2 pan.
- In medium bowl stir flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt together.
- In small bowl mix slightly beaten egg, milk and bacon drippings.
- Stir egg mixture into flour mixture.
- Bake for 25 – 30 minutes in a 450ºF oven.

- 1 cup flour
- 3/4 cup cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg slightly beaten
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons bacon drippings or vegetable oil
