Pretzel Hugs Recipe

Fresh salty pretzels provide the perfect base for a soft white chocolate Hug and slightly crunchy and colorful M&M. This is the perfect dessert recipe to make with kids of any age.

My only warning is buy some extra ingredients because it’s too hard to avoid snacking on pretzel snaps, hugs and m&ms while making these!

We have several fun recipes with M&Ms like our M&M Cereal Bars, M&M Cookies and M&M Oatmeal Cookie Bars, but this combo on a pretzel is my favorite!

M&Ms candy adds color and makes these mini treats a little more crunchy and a lot more fun. At Christmas time use red and green M&Ms. At Valentine’s Day use red and pink M&Ms. Easter calls for pastel colors. For the 4th of July, red, white and blue M&Ms are perfect!

Snyder’s of Hanover Snaps Pretzels are square and sometimes come in a variety called butter snaps. We have a preference for the regular snaps over the butter snaps, but both are high quality pretzels. If square pretzels are difficult to find then small or mini pretzels work fine.

The key to making the best pretzel hugs is to start with fresh pretzels and enjoy these treats within a couple days for maximum freshness.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Square pretzels or mini pretzels
  • Hershey’s hugs
  • M&Ms

Tips

  • Use a fresh, brand new bag of pretzels for fresh treats
  • Have a damp dish cloth nearby to clean up fingers and avoid spreading melted chocolate
  • For maximum freshness enjoy pretzel hugs within 2 – 3 days
  • Be sure to store treats in an air tight bag or container on the counter or in the refrigerator
  • Small batches are easier for kids to manage
  • Parchment paper makes clean-up easy, but the treats will slip around a little bit, a non-stick mat can be a bit easier to use
  • To get perfectly centered M&Ms without any smearing small batches will be the best bet so you can take your time and don’t feel rushed
  • Hugs can be softened in the microwave in small batches, but we prefer the oven for more even heating

Step By Step Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with a non-stick cover or parchment paper. Arrange pretzels in a single, flat layer.
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  3. Unwrap hugs candy and place the flat side down in the center of the pretzel. One hug fits nicely on one pretzel.
  4. Carefully transport hugs on pretzels to the oven without bumping or jiggling so that hugs stay centered on the pretzels.
  5. When hugs are in the oven don’t walk away and check often over the course of about 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
  6. Once hugs are a bit shinny remove from the oven and place 1 M&M in the center of each hug. Gently push down to help place the M&M as desired.
  7. Allow to cool then store in an airtight bag in a cool place.
