Baked Spaghetti with Italian Sausage

Everyone in our family, even the picky eaters love this easy pasta meal! When this Baked Spaghetti with Italian Sausage is put on the table people don’t talk they just eat and smile.  This is a mealtime routine I can get used to!

Adding a few ingredients to the spaghetti and sauce, then mixing everything up in the mixer saves time and evenly distributes extra flavor throughout the dish.  Baking the spaghetti allows all of the flavors to blend together and stay warm longer in the baking dish.

Using Italian sausage adds so much more flavor to this casserole than ground beef. If you like a little more kick a spicy or zesty sausage can be used too.

Served with Garlic Parmesan Broccoli and Cheesy Texas Toast this is a classic family meal that is very budget-friendly.

Growing kids get hungry and this is a great pasta casserole to help fill them up in a budget.  We’ve made Spaghetti Pizza and Baked Mosticcoli to keep the family happy and this is another solid meal to add to the rotation!

I love how a large 9×13 dish can be filled up to feed a big family or friends.  The recipe can also easily be split up into smaller dishes to create a delicious freezer meal.

This is one of my favorite casseroles to use some frozen Homemade Spaghetti Sauce. If I don’t have time to totally defrost the sauce it can be warmed in the skillet along with the sausage once it’s been drained.

Cook the spaghetti according to the directions on the package. Drain and add butter to the spaghetti OR add spaghetti to a mixing bowl with butter, Parmesan cheese and eggs.

Use the mixer on low speed to help coat each strand of spaghetti with this rich and delicious mixture. The mixer will also help break up some of the pieces making it easier for kids to eat.

  • Eggs, Parmesan cheese and butter in mixing bowl
  • Butter, egg and cheese covered spaghetti

Brown sausage in a skillet and drain. If pasta sauce is cold it can be heated in the skillet with the drained sausage.

Pour half of spaghetti in a casserole dish. Cover with a layer of half the ricotta cheese.

  • Browned Italian sausage in skillet
  • Layer of ricotta cheese on top of spaghetti in casserole dish

Then add an even layer of half of sausage and spaghetti sauce. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese generously on top of sauce layer.

  • Layer of sausage and pasta sauce on baked spaghetti
  • Mozzarella cheese sprinkled on sauce, sausage and spaghetti

Repeat layers. Cover tightly with foil and bake in a 350°F oven for about 30 minutes.

Then uncover and bake for 10 – 15 minutes until the spaghetti is heated through and the cheese begins to brown on top.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips for Making Baked Spaghetti

  • Using a mixer will help break up the spaghetti into smaller pieces and be a very efficient way to cut the pasta with all the yummy flavors.
  • If using whole wheat pasta the amount of red sauce will need to be increased.
  • I like to add an extra cup of sauce before freezing or a few spoonfuls before reheating to keep the casserole moist.
  • Italian sausage should be ground and removed from a casing and fully cooked before adding to the casserole.
  • Uncooked casserole can be covered tightly before freezing and defrost when ready to bake for a super easy freezer meal.
  • I prefer shredded Parmesan cheese, but grated Parmesan cheese can be used in a pinch.
