Chocolate Hermits

These Chocolate Hermits are the best old-fashioned cookies with icing that I've had!  The nuts and raisins add a great flavor and chewiness while the icing keeps them sweet.  Our family really enjoys these Chocolate Hermit Cookies!

Ingredients

Chocolate Hermits

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup raisins if using large raisins chop them up
  • 1 cup nuts chopped
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate melted and cooled for 10-20 minutes
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Icing

  • 1/2 pound powdered sugar 2 cups = 1/2 pound
  • 1/4 cup Crisco
  • dash salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate and set aside.  
  • Cream sugar and shortening, beat in eggs, vanilla, raisins, and nuts.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Add chocolate and mix well.
  • Mix remaining dry ingredients together and alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the mixing bowl.  Stir after the addition of each ingredient.  
  • Drop by teaspoonful 2 inches apart onto a well-greased cookie sheet.  Bake 10 to 14 minutes.

Icing

  • Blend powdered sugar, Crisco, salt and milk together and mix well.
  • Add melted butter and vanilla.  Blend thoroughly and spread on cooled cookies.  Could also add cocoa for chocolate flavored icing.
