These Chocolate Hermits are the best old-fashioned cookies with icing that I've had! The nuts and raisins add a great flavor and chewiness while the icing keeps them sweet. Our family really enjoys these Chocolate Hermit Cookies!
Melt chocolate and set aside.
Cream sugar and shortening, beat in eggs, vanilla, raisins, and nuts. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Add chocolate and mix well.
Mix remaining dry ingredients together and alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the mixing bowl. Stir after the addition of each ingredient.
Drop by teaspoonful 2 inches apart onto a well-greased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 14 minutes.
Blend powdered sugar, Crisco, salt and milk together and mix well.
Add melted butter and vanilla. Blend thoroughly and spread on cooled cookies. Could also add cocoa for chocolate flavored icing.
