Old Fashioned Braised Short Ribs

Short ribs taste a lot like a beef pot roast.  The cut of meat tastes best when using a low and slow cooking method with moist heat.  Our go-to cooking tool for roasts and short ribs is our 6-quart slow cooker.

We live on a farm and our parents are kind enough to share beef from cattle that they raise with us.  Since we get all of the cuts of meat we get to experiment with new recipes.  Here is a chart featuring the different cuts of beef that I like to reference on the Ohio Beef Council’s website.

I found this recipe in a stack from my husband’s late grandma.  Sometimes the old-time basic recipes are some of the best.

Decreasing Food Waste

As farmers, we know how the work is to raise animals.  We believe that part of our duty as responsible people is to avoid wasting meat and all food as much as possible.

Short ribs are an example of a cut that can’t be made into steaks or some of the premium cuts of beef, but we can utilize them and make them delicious!

We work to be conscientious about food waste in general as a way to decrease our environmental impact.  Another huge advantage of investing effort in planning food is saving money.  Planning meals and a grocery list that use fresh meat and produce takes more time, but there are rewards to enjoy.
